Voltage optimisation for UK healthcare estates
NHS trusts, hospitals, health centres, and care homes typically run heavy electrical load around the clock. Voltage optimisation delivers measurable kWh reductions without touching critical clinical systems, and feeds cleanly into Trust net-zero reporting.
Typical sites
Sites we install in.
Healthcare is one of the strongest fits for voltage optimisation in the UK. Load is continuous, spend is high, and the statutory focus on net-zero delivery means M&V-ready kWh reductions are directly useful as reporting evidence, not just invoice savings.
- Acute NHS trust hospitals and multi-block estates
- Mental health and community units
- Primary care networks and health centres
- Care homes (residential and nursing)
- Private hospitals and specialist clinics
- Hospice and end-of-life care sites
Why voltage optimisation fits
Continuous load, clinical-grade reliability.
Healthcare estates run HVAC, lighting, and catering around the clock, with distinct peaks for imaging, theatres, sterilisation, and laboratory work. Much of this load (motors, ballasts, transformers, power supplies) is voltage-sensitive, which makes the V² savings mechanism straightforwardly applicable.
Because a Volta unit is a passive device installed upstream of your distribution, it doesn't interact with any clinical equipment on your side of the meter. Ward HVAC, theatre supply, diagnostic imaging, UPS-backed critical loads. All unchanged. What changes is the incoming voltage the whole site sees.
The M&V report you receive post-install is the record Trust sustainability and estates teams use for SECR, Greener NHS, and board-level reporting. The numbers are defensible and the methodology is documented.
Typical load profile
Equipment that drives the saving.
- Chiller plant and AHUs
- Ward HVAC, lighting, nurse-call systems
- Theatres and sterilisation
- Diagnostic imaging (non-UPS loads)
- Steam, hot-water, and catering plant
- Lifts, auto-doors, car-park infrastructure
Install considerations
Redundancy and continuity are non-negotiable.
Install is always planned around clinical operations. For acute sites, that typically means a short out-of-hours outage on a non-critical feed, coordinated with the Trust estates team and any backup-supply regime. We'll plan the outage with your M&E lead at the proposal stage, not on the day.
For multi-block estates, we'll often phase installs across several supply points over several planned maintenance windows, rather than a single disruptive visit. We work to your programme, not the other way around.
UPS-backed and generator-backed critical loads are unaffected by the VO unit. They sit on their own supply paths and maintain the voltages they were designed for. The VO unit only sees the mains supply.
Case studies
Healthcare sites we've worked with.
Named, permissioned case studies for healthcare land in a follow-up release. If you're scoping a project now and need a reference on the call, ask when you book the survey.
Is your healthcare estate a fit?
The quickest way to find out is a site survey. We measure before we quote.
