Voltage optimisation for UK MATs, universities, and schools

Education estates swing between full operational load in term time and near-empty buildings during holidays. Voltage optimisation holds savings through both modes, with no change to timetables or teaching operations.

Typical sites

Schools, colleges, and universities.

Education is a natural fit for VO because the commercial case is clean (tight budgets, clear payback framing), the install constraint is predictable (half-terms and holidays), and the reporting benefit is direct (sustainability strategies and DfE carbon reduction targets).

  • Multi-academy trusts (primary and secondary)
  • Further education colleges
  • University campuses and halls of residence
  • Sixth-form colleges and specialist academies
  • Independent schools with mixed residential estate
  • University research and teaching labs

Why voltage optimisation fits

Tight budgets. Defined install windows. Reporting pressure.

Education estates carry a mix of heating, hot water, catering, and lighting load that responds well to voltage reduction. University campuses add large plant rooms, data centres, and research labs to the mix, all of which see a meaningful saving at the supply level without any change to how the equipment is operated.

The commercial case in education is usually capex-constrained. Schools and trusts need payback windows that fit within their planning cycle and auditable numbers that survive scrutiny from trust finance, DfE, or OfSTED-adjacent review. Our proposal format is designed for exactly that.

For trusts running a multi-site portfolio, we can standardise one VO specification across the estate and roll up savings as a single reported figure. Useful for SECR, for Salix or CEAF funding applications, and for internal reporting.

Typical load profile

Equipment that drives the saving.

  • Heating, hot water, and ventilation
  • Classroom, corridor, and hall lighting
  • Catering kitchens and dining halls
  • Sports and leisure facilities (pools, gyms)
  • IT suites, server rooms, and teaching technology
  • Specialist plant (labs, workshops, residential halls)

Install considerations

Half-terms and holidays are your friend.

The easiest install window in education is a school or university holiday. We plan the install to fit inside a half-term, summer, or reading week, with commissioning completed before staff or students return. For most sites this is a single planned visit; for multi-site trusts, we phase installs across successive holidays.

For sites with live residential halls or 24/7 plant (server rooms, lab freezers), we install on a non-critical feed or sequence the work around the critical loads. The VO unit sits passively once commissioned; it doesn't need ongoing operator attention from your facilities team.

M&V is run over the first full term post-install to give a matched-operating-period comparison, and the M&V report is written for a governing body or trust finance audience, not just an energy engineer.
